How to Protect Yourself Online
Before we dive into the blog on how to delete yourself from the internet and protect your personal information, let’s cover some backstory. This will help you understand why I’m writing this blog and why my kids are helping out.
The Scary Reality of Online Information Exposure
Two years ago, I was working at a real estate brokerage when one of the agents showed me a website that exposed customers’ information. I was shocked to find my phone number, date of birth, and details of my friends and family listed online. When your information is exposed, you’re not just at risk, but your family is too. Scammers often use this information to con people, especially the elderly, by pretending you’re in trouble and need money urgently.
To protect your family, remove your information from the internet, especially if you are in the public eye. I made a video on how to locate anyone for free without registering or giving out your phone number. The information available online can be incredibly detailed, often only missing something like your high school mascot to access your bank account.
My Experience with DataSeal
After discovering how much of my information was available online, I searched for a service to help remove it. I found DataSeal, and they reached out to me to try their service. Here’s my one-year review.
DataSeal offers a user-friendly portal. After logging in, you can see your privacy score and how many items they’ve removed. They continuously scan for any new listings of your information. For me, they found 63 items, 58 of which were removed. While it’s almost impossible to remove every trace of yourself online, DataSeal does an excellent job of keeping your information off most public sites.
Features and Pricing
DataSeal offers individual and family plans. I recommend the yearly plan to save money and ensure continuous protection. The family plan is great for protecting your loved ones. They also offer a business plan, which can be an excellent perk for your employees, protecting their personal and financial well-being.
Why Online Security Matters
Online security is crucial because once your information is out there, it can be used to access your bank accounts, crypto accounts, and more. Thieves can wipe you out before you even realize what’s happening.
Tips for Enhancing Your Online Privacy
- Use a VPN: Opera offers a free VPN that works well.
- Avoid Over-Sharing: Don’t sign up for unnecessary credit cards or newsletters. Instead get high limit credit cards using this method.
- Utilize Consumer Protection Acts: If available in your state, like the CCPA in California, delete your credit profile to prevent your information from being sold. Instead, opt out of information sharing of your personal data.
- Don’t send paper check: Use your banks bill payment service as your account numbers are never disclosed in this manner.
Involving the Kids
Talking to my kids about online security, they understand the importance of protecting their personal items, whether it’s their favorite video game or their savings. It’s a valuable lesson in today’s digital age.
Final Thoughts
DataSeal has been an excellent service for maintaining online privacy. It’s on autopilot, making it easy to use. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to protect their online presence. For more details, check out the links in the description box below.
