DIY Oil Change for Your 2014 Dodge Caravan: A Step-by-Step Guide

Changing the oil in your vehicle can seem daunting, especially if you’re accustomed to taking it to a shop. However, doing it yourself can save you money and ensure it’s done right. In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the oil change process for a 2014 Dodge Caravan with a 3.6L V6 engine, highlighting the tools you’ll need and the steps to follow. Watch the full video HERE.

Why Change Your Own Oil?

Recently, I called a shop to inquire about an oil change, and they quoted me around $150. That’s a hefty price, especially when you can do it yourself for a fraction of the cost. Plus, knowing how to change your own oil gives you valuable skills for maintaining your vehicle.

Tools You’ll Need

Before you dive into the oil change, make sure you have the following tools ready:

  • Funnel: For pouring new oil without spills.
  • Magnetic Drain Plug Remover: Makes it easier to handle the drain plug.
  • 11mm Socket: To remove the drain plug.
  • 24mm Socket: For the oil filter housing.
  • Oil Catch Pan: To catch the old oil as it drains.
  • Oil Absorbent Pads: To keep your workspace clean.
  • Safety Goggles: To protect your eyes.

Having everything prepared will help the process go smoothly and keep your garage clean.

Step 1: Prepare Your Vehicle

  1. Warm Up the Engine: Let the vehicle run for a few minutes to warm up the oil. This helps it drain more easily.
  2. Lift the Vehicle: I used an electric scissor jack, which can be safer than a manual one. Ensure the car is secure before going underneath.

Step 2: Drain the Old Oil

  1. Locate the Drain Pan: Underneath the vehicle, find the oil drain pan (it will be labeled ‘E’ for engine to avoid confusion with the transmission pan).
  2. Remove the Drain Plug: Using your 11mm socket, loosen the drain plug. Be careful, as the oil may be hot. Use your magnetic drain plug remover to avoid burning your hands.
  3. Allow the Oil to Drain: Let the oil fully drain into your catch pan. This may take a few minutes.

Step 3: Change the Oil Filter

  1. Locate the Oil Filter: The oil filter housing is accessible from the top of the engine.
  2. Loosen the Oil Filter: Use your 24mm socket to loosen the oil filter housing. Once it’s loose, you can remove it by hand. Allow any remaining oil to drain into the pan.
  3. Install the New Oil Filter: Before installing the new filter, replace the rubber seal to ensure a tight fit. Lube it lightly with some new oil for easier installation.

Step 4: Reinstall the Drain Plug

  1. Replace the Drain Plug: After all the oil has drained, reinstall the drain plug. Use a torque wrench to tighten it to the manufacturer’s specs to avoid stripping it.

Step 5: Add New Oil

  1. Add Fresh Oil: Using a funnel, pour the recommended amount of new oil into the engine. I prefer using Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 5W-20 High Mileage.
  2. Check Oil Level: After adding oil, allow it to settle for a few minutes. Use the dipstick to check the oil level, ensuring it’s within the safe zone.

Step 6: Reset the Oil Reminder Light

  1. Reset the Light: To reset the oil reminder light, insert the key into the ignition and pump the brake pedal three times while the ignition is on. This simple step will reset the light.

Final Tips

  • Pro Tip: When adding oil, place the oil filler cap where the hood latch is. This will remind you to replace it before closing the hood, preventing a potential disaster.
  • Check for Leaks: After you’ve finished, double-check the drain plug and oil filter for any leaks.
