Essential Tools for Installation
Before you begin, gather these tools to ensure a smooth installation:
- Allen Key (3mm): For various bolts throughout the assembly.
- 8mm Socket or Open-Ended Wrench: Preferably a small one for tight spaces.
- T25 Torx Bit: To remove the existing cover.
- T30 Torx Bit: For the front bracket.
- Phillips Screwdriver: Necessary if you’re installing the wraparound curtain, to secure the track holder.
- Plastic Pry Bar Tool: To safely remove interior covers.
It’s highly recommended to avoid power tools when tightening fasteners, as they can easily strip threads. Manual tools are preferred for precision.
Getting Ready: Pre-Installation Setup
The White Top Adventures shelf is designed for Sprinter builds (specifically mentioned for the 907 VS30 model), offering a cab area shelf with an optional front curtain and a wraparound curtain. It comes with carpet already included and features an updated design for easier attachment. All hardware is included, making it a comprehensive kit. This system is also compatible with aftermarket seat swivels, including more affordable options.
Included Hardware: A Closer Look
The kit comes with thoughtfully designed components:
- Two Longer Brackets: These attach to the vehicle at the top near the B pillar.
- Shorter Brackets: These attach lower down towards the front of the shelve.
- Curtain Brackets: Designed to hold the front curtain.
- Consistent Hardware: A great feature is that all bolts are the same 3mm Allen key type, and all nuts are uniform nylon nuts, simplifying the assembly process.
Assembly Overview: Understanding the Connections
The assembly involves attaching the longer and shorter brackets to the van’s factory mounting points. The shelf then slides into these brackets, secured with consistent 3mm Allen key bolts, washers, and nylon nuts.
Installing Brackets via Factory Mounting Points
- Expose Mounting Points: Use a plastic pry bar tool to carefully remove the covers, exposing the factory screws.
- Remove Screws: Use a T25 bit for the rear screw and a T30 bit for the forward bolt. These may be tight and require an impact driver or ratchet. Hand-tighten them on re-installation to prevent rattling.
- Attach Brackets:
- Smaller Tower Bracket (Rear): Slide this from behind and pull it towards you, ensuring the hole aligns before re-inserting the T30 screw. Leave it slightly loose for now.
- Taller Bracket (Front): This one is straightforward. If your van lacks a B-pillar trim, consider adding a washer to make it protrude slightly more. Keep this loose as well to allow the shelf to slide in.
Adding the Upholstery Liner to the WTA Shelf
The shelf comes with a carpet liner. While it includes 3M tape in two spots, for a more secure and lasting bond, consider using a strong adhesive like 3M 77 or 3M 90 spray.
- Adhesive Application: Peel back a strip of the existing tape and apply the spray adhesive from the back of the liner onto the shelf.
- Binding: Wait a few minutes for the glue to “flash over” (become tacky). Then, carefully align and press the liner onto the shelf, working slowly, especially on the ridge area. Push firmly into the ridge to get a crisp line.
- Contouring: Gently peel back and glue the remaining sections, ensuring a nice contour on the edges without spraying adhesive on the carpet’s outer edge.
Sliding the Shelf into Place
With the brackets attached to the vehicle and the upholstery liner on the shelf, it’s time to install the shelf itself:
- Slide In: Carefully slide the shelf into place, ensuring it goes above all four tower brackets (two front, two back).
- Troubleshooting (Wraparound Curtain): If you opted for the wraparound curtain, be mindful of the track. If it’s protruding, you may need to gently push out and manipulate it to fit.
- Tighten Securely: Ensure the brackets are loose enough to allow the shelf to fit, but not so loose that it rattles.
Attaching the Shelf to the Tower Brackets
Each tower bracket will be secured with two 3mm Allen key bolts, a washer on the bottom, and a washer and nylon nut on top.
- Start from Bottom: Insert the bolt from the bottom.
- Add Washers & Nut: Add a washer, then the nylon nut (white side facing up) from the top.
- Tighten: Push back on the bracket slightly while tightening to get a perfect fit. Repeat for all four brackets.
Installing Curtain Rod Holders on the WTA Shelf
The curtain rod holders are easily installed using the same 3mm Allen key bolt, a washer, and a nylon nut. Remember to avoid power tools.
White Top Adventure Shelf Privacy Cover Install
The privacy cover adds an extra layer of concealment.
- Mock Fit First: Do a mock fit of the privacy cover before peeling off the double-sided tape.
- Velcro Attachment: It’s beneficial to attach a velcro piece underneath the privacy cover for a more secure hold on both sides.
- Secure Installation: Once satisfied with the fit, peel off the tape on the bottom section and secure the cover.
White Top Adventure Front Curtain and Rod
The front curtain, designed to slide on a rod, features a magnetic section that self-adheres to the van’s body, providing a “nice tight fit” even on windy days. The fabric is described as thick and “satin-like.”
White Top Adventure Wrap Around Curtain Install – 180 Total Black Curtain System
The wraparound curtain provides complete privacy.
- Components: It includes 16 track rollers and 16 white clips. The fabric has 82 squares, with one roller to be placed in every sixth slot.
- Track Lockers: Two lockers are included to secure the track once the curtain is in place.
- Aesthetics: The curtain offers a “royalty Black and Gold” look (though the gold ropes are not real gold). The satin-like fabric is praised for its finish. Note: While most hardware is Allen key, the track holder uses a Phillips head screw.
How the Complete White Top Adventures Shelf System Works
The entire system integrates seamlessly:
- Curtain Functionality: The front curtain slides easily left and right and locks in place with small clips.
- Privacy Cover Access: The top privacy cover can be easily accessed via a zipper, allowing you to hide contents on the shelf.
- Wraparound Curtain Management: The wraparound curtain is easy to manage and can be tied up with the front curtain to stay out of the way.
Final Thoughts about WTA and What’s Next for the 170 Extended Sprinter Van Build!
The White Top Adventures system is praised for its quality and completeness. While the installation of the shelf itself is relatively quick (around 3 hours), careful planning, especially with wiring for future additions like HDMI, Ethernet, USB-C, and video cables, can prolong the process but ensures future-proofing. The privacy cover’s design allows for access to the lip, hinting at plans for a mounted TV that will be hidden when the cover is up. The shelf and curtains offer a quick and effective way to achieve privacy, especially compared to traditional window covers. Overall, the system provides a robust and aesthetically pleasing solution for optimizing your van’s interior.
