Exploring the Hamswan Portable Power Station

What’s in the Box?

Upon unboxing the Hamswan, I found the power station itself, a power brick for charging, a cigarette lighter adapter, and an owner’s manual. Notably, the power brick, rated at 88 watts, seemed a bit underwhelming for a unit capable of handling up to 600 watts. This limitation might extend charging times, but more on that later.

Setting Up and Key Features

Operating the Hamswan is straightforward. With a simple press of a large power button, the unit comes to life. The front panel displays various ports, including USB, DC outputs, and an AC outlet. A notable feature is its pure sine wave inverter, which is crucial for powering sensitive electronics.

Technical Specifications

The Hamswan is equipped with:

  • 600 watts of output capacity (with peaks reaching higher)
  • Multiple charging options, including AC and DC ports
  • A solar input capable of handling 100 to 400 watts
  • A decent selection of USB ports, including Quick Charge options

The lithium-ion battery is a bit of a drawback compared to lithium iron phosphate batteries, which tend to offer longer lifespans and better performance.

Testing the Power Station

Charging Ryobi Batteries

My first test involved charging two Ryobi batteries. The power station handled this task effortlessly, with a steady output hovering around 88 watts. Monitoring the voltage, I noticed it remained stable, ensuring a reliable charge.

Running a 400-Watt Heater

Next, I pushed the Hamswan to its limits by connecting a 400-watt heater. It sustained the load without a hitch for over five minutes, demonstrating its capability to handle higher wattage devices. Even while charging other devices, the unit maintained a consistent output.

Attempting to Power a 1500-Watt Heat Gun

I decided to push it further by testing a heat gun rated at 1500 watts. Initially, the Hamswan managed to operate it on a lower setting. However, it quickly reached its limit, shutting off as expected when the demand exceeded its capacity. This behavior is typical and highlights the importance of knowing your devices’ power requirements.

Charging in the Car

I attempted to use the included car charger, but unfortunately, the barrel connector was incompatible. This was a letdown, as it limited my ability to charge the unit on the go.

Performance Insights

Over the course of my testing, the Hamswan proved to be reliable, maintaining stable outputs while powering multiple devices simultaneously. However, I did notice some limitations, particularly in its charging capabilities. It took significantly longer to recharge the unit using the provided power brick than I anticipated, taking around 7.3 hours to reach full charge.

Final Thoughts and Rating

Overall, the Hamswan Portable Power Station stands out for its simplicity and functionality. It successfully delivered the power it claimed and is lightweight enough for easy transport. However, improvements are needed in several areas:

  • Charging Speed: The power brick is a limiting factor.
  • Battery Type: A lithium iron phosphate battery would enhance durability and performance.
  • Design: A foldable handle and additional features like wireless charging would be beneficial.

While the Hamswan has its strengths, it also has notable drawbacks. With an attractive price point—around $225 after discounts—it offers good value, especially for those new to portable power stations. If you’re looking for a reliable unit that can handle essential tasks without overwhelming features, this might be a solid choice.
