ThinkDiag 2: A Comprehensive OBD2 Scan Tool for DIY Mechanics

If you’re a DIY mechanic or a car enthusiast, you’ve likely encountered a variety of OBD2 scan tools, ranging from professional-grade equipment to app-based options. One of the latest contenders in the app-based market is the ThinkDiag 2. In this blog, we’ll take a detailed look at how it stacks up against its predecessor, the ThinkDiag 1, and whether it’s worth the upgrade for those looking to enhance their diagnostic toolset.

Watch the full video HERE.

Key Differences Between ThinkDiag 1 and ThinkDiag 2

Before diving into the hands-on review, let’s first outline the main differences between the ThinkDiag 1 and the ThinkDiag 2. While both tools come with robust features, the ThinkDiag 2 has a few noteworthy upgrades:

  • CAN FD Support: The ThinkDiag 2 supports CAN FD, which is crucial for newer vehicles, particularly GM models starting around 2020. If you drive a newer GM vehicle, this might be a game-changer.
  • Bluetooth Upgrade: The ThinkDiag 2 features Bluetooth 5.0, offering a more stable and faster connection compared to the Bluetooth 4.2 in the ThinkDiag 1.
  • More Languages: The ThinkDiag 2 supports up to 12 languages, whereas the ThinkDiag 1 supports 9, making it more versatile for global users.
  • Package Size: The ThinkDiag 2 comes in a more compact package, with just the dongle. In contrast, the ThinkDiag 1 includes additional accessories like a carrying case and a larger dongle.

With these key differences in mind, let’s see how the ThinkDiag 2 performs in real-world use.

Connecting the ThinkDiag 2 to Your Vehicle

Setting up the ThinkDiag 2 is straightforward, even for beginners. The device plugs directly into your vehicle’s OBD2 port, and once connected, it shows a red power light, a green check mark for vehicle connection, and a blue light for I/O communication. From there, you can launch the ThinkDiag Plus app on your smartphone (available for both iOS and Android) to start interacting with your vehicle’s systems.

Scanning and Diagnostic Capabilities

After connecting the ThinkDiag 2, the next step is to run a full system scan. In my case, I deliberately triggered an airbag warning light and had an existing check engine light due to a small EVAP leak. The ThinkDiag 2 was able to quickly scan and retrieve fault codes, providing Freeze Frame data for deeper insights.

One of the advantages of the ThinkDiag 2 is its speed—it completed a full vehicle scan in under 40 seconds. The app also offers an automatic Google search option for troubleshooting fault codes, although this feature did encounter a few bugs in my testing.

Additionally, I appreciated the tool’s ability to generate detailed health reports, which can be shared in PDF format. This is especially useful if you’re working with a mechanic or assisting a friend with their car troubles.

Key Features Tested

  1. Live Data and Graphing: The ThinkDiag 2 stands out for its graphing capability, a rare feature among app-based scan tools. I tested it by monitoring injector pulse data, and the graph’s refresh rate was smooth with minimal lag. This makes it easier to visualize data while diagnosing issues.
  2. Activation Tests: I also experimented with activation tests for components like the fuel injector. Unfortunately, some features didn’t work as expected, such as toggling off the injector for cylinder 1.
  3. Special Functions: One of the most exciting aspects of the ThinkDiag 2 is its range of special functions, from cam/crank relearns to exhaust phaser cleaning. I tested the exhaust phaser cleaning, and the vehicle’s idle speed noticeably fluctuated, indicating the tool was successfully engaging with the system.
  4. Programming Keys: One area where the ThinkDiag 2 fell short was key programming. I attempted to program a new key for my Dodge Caravan, but the device couldn’t retrieve the required PIN code. This was disappointing, especially since other scan tools can perform this task without issue.

Clearing Codes and Maintenance Functions

Once I finished my diagnostic tests, I used the ThinkDiag 2 to clear system fault codes. The tool worked seamlessly, removing the check engine light and airbag warning after repairs. Additionally, I explored the 15 available maintenance functions, which include oil resets, battery matching for BMW and Mini vehicles, and steering angle sensor recalibration.

For BMW and Mini owners, the ThinkDiag 2 includes advanced functions like battery registration, which is a critical feature after replacing your battery.

Verdict: Is the ThinkDiag 2 Worth It?

In conclusion, the ThinkDiag 2 is a powerful, affordable scan tool that offers a variety of functions usually reserved for more expensive devices. It’s great for both DIYers and professionals looking for a versatile tool that covers many modern vehicles. However, it has some limitations, especially when it comes to key programming and certain activation tests.

Overall, I would rate the ThinkDiag 2 a 7 out of 10. It offers excellent value with bi-directional controls, CAN FD support, and app-based convenience, but it still has room for improvement, particularly in refining key features. If you own a newer vehicle, especially a GM model, the ThinkDiag 2 might be a solid upgrade from the ThinkDiag 1. However, for those who need more advanced capabilities, other tools might be a better option.
