When building out a camper van, finding the right power solution is paramount. You need reliability, ample capacity, and a system that’s easy to integrate. Having navigated complex DIY battery setups in the past, I’m thrilled to share my experience with the Comvolt portable power station ecosystem. These units offer a game-changing approach to camper van power, promising setup in minutes and an incredible amount of juice.

In this post, we’ll put Comvolt to the test, exploring its efficiency, size, and weight, and showing you why it’s the ideal choice for powering your next adventure.

The Evolution of Van Power: From DIY Batteries to Comvolt’s Ecosystem

Just a few years ago, building your own battery bank was often the best (or only) way to get serious power in a van. But technology has come a long way! Comvolt’s portable power stations represent a significant leap forward, offering robust, user-friendly solutions that can even outperform custom DIY setups in certain areas.

I’ve been thoroughly testing these Comvolt units, including their 6,000Wh expansion unit and a 4,000Wh powered unit that I even took on a trip to Canada. Combined, these units, along with another expansion, can deliver an astounding 13,000Wh of power! That’s a massive amount of energy, more than I’ve ever had in a portable setup.

Understanding the Comvolt System: Powered vs. Expansion Units

Comvolt offers both powered units (like the 4,000Wh one) and expansion packs (like the 6,000Wh unit). Understanding the difference is key to building your ideal setup:

  • Powered Units: These are self-contained power stations with AC outlets, DC ports, solar inputs, and their own internal Battery Management System (BMS). They are the “brains” of the operation.
  • Expansion Packs: These units are designed purely for capacity. For the same weight as a 4,000Wh powered unit, you can get a 6,000Wh expansion pack! The trade-off is they lack AC ports and direct solar inputs. Instead, they feature Anderson 120 connectors and communication ports for seamless integration with powered units.

All Comvolt units boast durable aluminum construction (no cheap plastic here!), sturdy handles, and use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) battery cells for longevity and safety. They’re also fully serviceable, meaning you can access and adjust components if needed.

Effortless Setup: The Magic of Anderson Connectors & Auto-Balancing

This is where Comvolt truly shines for van builders. Connecting multiple units to create a massive power bank is incredibly simple.

  • Anderson 120 Connectors: Comvolt units use these robust connectors for power transfer between units. They’re common in heavy machinery and new 12V AC systems, known for their reliability and ease of use. Just slide them in – it’s literally that easy.
  • Automatic Battery Balancing: The most astonishing feature is that you don’t need to manually balance the batteries. If one unit is at 50% and another at 100%, the internal BMS handles everything automatically. This eliminates days of configuration work and significantly boosts confidence for a seamless van installation.

Once connected, power flows freely between all units. Charge one, and they all charge. Draw from one, and the load is shared across the entire bank.

Getting Power Out: Powering Your Van’s DC Loads

With thousands of watt-hours at your fingertips, getting power into your van’s electrical system is just as straightforward:

  • Using an Anderson 120 connector from one of the Comvolt units (or combining multiple for extreme loads), you connect directly to your van’s positive and negative junction ports.
  • With over 300 amps available, you can effortlessly run everything: a 12V AC system, refrigerator, lights, light bars, winches – anything that requires 12V DC power.

Keeping It Charged: Versatile Charging Options

Comvolt offers multiple ways to keep your massive power bank topped up, making it incredibly flexible for any adventure scenario:

  1. Shore Power (Wall Charger):
    • Each powered unit comes with an XT90 connector for wall charging.
    • Each charger is rated at about 500 watts. Even better, you only need to plug in one unit to charge the entire interconnected system! This avoids clutter and simplifies your van’s electrical inlets.
    • Charging slowly generally prolongs battery life, a practice I personally prefer.
  1. Vehicle Smart Chargers (Alternator):
    • Comvolt offers high-output 30-amp vehicle smart chargers. For my build, I’ll even run two!
    • These are incredibly easy to hook up: just connect to your vehicle’s battery (positive and negative) and use a remote trigger switch for on/off control.
    • Unlike many aftermarket units, these are plug-and-play, requiring no complex configuration.
    • Important Note: While newer Mercedes Sprinters can handle high amperage loads, always check your vehicle’s alternator capacity before running such high loads.
  1. Solar Charging:
    • The powered units feature a dedicated solar input (XT60 connector), rated at 400 watts max (20-45 volts).
    • Just like shore power, plugging solar into one powered unit will distribute the charge across the entire interconnected system.
    • Workaround for Larger Arrays: While limited to 400W directly, Comvolt’s native 12V two-way ports offer a workaround! You can connect a larger solar array (e.g., 1000W) to an external MPPT charge controller and a small LiFePO4 battery, and then feed that battery’s output into the Comvolt’s Anderson or XT90 input ports. This clever trick bypasses the 400W limit, making the ecosystem incredibly flexible.

Unmatched Efficiency: The Power of Native 12V Systems

One of the most significant advantages of Comvolt units is their native 12-volt design. Most other portable power stations are built around higher internal voltages (e.g., 48V or 50V) and then convert down to 12V for DC loads or up for AC.

  • Reduced Energy Loss: Every time you convert voltage, you lose efficiency. Comvolt’s native 12V means minimal energy loss when charging from a 12V car alternator or powering 12V DC appliances. It’s like avoiding currency exchange fees – you keep more of your power.
  • High DC Load Capacity: This native design allows Comvolt units to handle enormous DC loads. I tested it with a 1500W heat gun (drawing 52 amps!) and a 100-amp load tester simultaneously. Most other portable power stations, even high-end ones, can only handle 10-20 amps on the DC side without issues. Comvolt handles this abuse flawlessly, proving it’s built specifically for demanding RV and camper van DC applications.

Monitoring & Control: Simple & Intuitive

Comvolt has thought of everything for mobile use, ensuring you’re never left in the dark about your power status.

  • Ethernet Connection for Displays: Instead of proprietary cables, Comvolt uses standard Ethernet cables to daisy-chain units and connect to a display. You can use cables of any length, making custom installs easy.
  • Centralized Display: One main display (available in various sizes) can monitor the status of all interconnected batteries (3,000W, 4,000W, 6,000W, etc.). You can easily configure unit IDs and check individual battery details.
  • Remote Power Switch: No need to crawl on your hands and knees! A single remote power switch can turn on/off your entire Comvolt power bank and even activate the inverter, making control incredibly convenient from anywhere in your van.
  • No Apps Needed: Unlike complex systems that require multiple apps for different components (BMS, charger, shunt), the Comvolt ecosystem simplifies everything with no apps or complicated settings. It just works.

Long-Term Reliability & Cold Weather Protection

Comvolt units are built to last and designed for diverse climates.

  • Serviceable Components: The entire unit is serviceable, allowing for maintenance like balancing individual battery cells with an active equalizer if needed over time. This extends the lifespan of your investment.
  • Active Cold Weather Protection: This is a crucial feature often missing in other portable power stations. Comvolt units have active heating elements. If you attempt to charge them in freezing temperatures (even down to -20°F), they will first warm the batteries to a safe temperature before beginning the charge cycle, protecting battery health and performance.

The only minor critique is the noise from the charging unit, but this is a tiny trade-off for such a powerful and well-designed system.
